The Developmental Neuroscience Laboratory for Epilepsy and Autism Research - Dr. Joaquin Lugo
The focus of my research is to understand the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive and social behavior deficits in animal models of childhood epilepsy.
In this course, students will use several molecular biology techniques such as western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and PCR to examine protein and mRNA expression of potential genes that may modulate epilepsy and autism in the brain. Students will also perform several behavioral tests that include social behavior, learning and memory, repetitive behavior, and vocal communication in rodents. Comparison between behavioral and molecular analyses will enable us to find and understand the neural mechanisms that underlie epilepsy and autism.
