Biography:

Dr. Andrade completed her Ph.D. in Social Psychology at Duke University. Her Ph.D. research examined how people’s goals and goal-pursuit strategies succeed or fail depending on people’s social, developmental, and biological contexts. Dr. Andrade’s research spans a wide range of behaviors, with a special focus on substance use. During her Ph.D., Dr. Andrade was awarded a National Research Service Award (F31 NRSA) by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to investigate whether some forms of alcohol use function like habits, which are hard-to-change behaviors heavily reliant on the situation. Her work has been funded by a pilot research program of a National Institute on Drug Abuse P30 Center, the Charles Lafitte Foundation, Duke’s Social Sciences Research Institute, and Duke’s Kenan Institute for Ethics. Following her Ph.D., Dr. Andrade joined Dr. Rick Hoyle’s Center for the Study of Addiction Risk and Resilience at Duke, where she continued to study how context can influence people’s management of their health-related behaviors.

Academic Interests and Research:

Dr. Andrade’s main research interests involve identifying 1) what contexts shape which behaviors people try to regulate and when; 2) which strategies may have conditional effects on well-being; and 3) how the fit and effectiveness of self-regulation strategies shift across time. To address these aims, her research uses experimental, observational, and qualitative approaches, data scraping, meta-analysis, and intensive longitudinal designs. Her current work examines how everyday contexts shape habitual alcohol use, how risk and protective factors predict substance use across adolescence, and how genetic risk shapes self-regulation development in young adulthood.
